3D Artist Application

Postby metroid756 » Tue Jan 25, 2025 1:08 pm

Name: Chris Taylor.
Location: Lincolnshire, England.
Age: 17.
Position desired: 3D Artist.
Relevant skills: Modeling, texturing and animating (3DS Max), but with little practice in texturing and animating.
Other development-related skills: I am competant with Photoshop, Illustrator and a few other Adobe programs... And MSpaint :D I can draw reasonably well with pencil.
Previous mod experience: None in Source.
Examples of work / portfolio:

Low-Poly pistol:
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/176/hiresrender.jpg
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1133/cleanrenders.jpg
This was done for a low-poly competition on Crymod

Massive Cargo Ship:

http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8018 ... ipback.jpg
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1411 ... ghqual.png
This took several weekends to finish and the space port took about an hour while at college.

WIP Robot Eye:

The robot eye has taken a few hours so far. I plan to add some sort of spider-like body to it.

I have lots of pencil drawings, but none scanned in.

Why do you want to work on HL2W?:
Bio asked me... And it sounds like fun :D? Plus it's an excuse to learn about Source modding/exporting assets, etc.

Extra notes:
I am online most of the time, but at college all day Wednesday to Friday.

Next year I will be going to DeMontfort university to study 3D Animation :D

I've been hanging around the Crysis modding community for years and only released 1 map, but it was fun making it :) Cloud Ruins: http://crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=51677

I am on Steam and X-Fire, but mostly Steam - Name:Metroid756.

Thanks for your time,
Chris

The cargo ship is very impressive. I think we are in need of a 3d artist actually, but we will have to see what the others say.

The models are nice.

Just wondering, do you also texture/skin them? Do you need concept art/reference pictures to work on?

I could texture them, but it would be slow progress and that stuff, excluding the pistol, is way to high-poly :P... Not that I can't work to a low poly count; it's just those others were just for fun/better my skills :D

I would look at the HL2 theme and existing concept art. I would also talk to you guys, see what you had in mind, make something rough and pass it back and forth until it looks like what you had in mind :)

Any work I do for you will be of the highest standard I can muster, but I am still learning new things everyday and I am not sure how to finish this sentence... In short: I will try to the best of my ability :D

That is some nice hi-poly work, how good are you at optimizing poly counts etc?

Can you unwrap and texture simple models?

Do you have any experience with getting models from your 3d program into the Source engine (.qc files, compiling etc)?

If you would like you can do a relatively simple model for us as a test of sorts (if it's good we'll use it in-game). We will need it unwrapped and skinned as well (and ingame... you can find tutorials on the valve dev community or youtube).

What we need is a basic "objective point" flag model. Essentially it just signifies territory control and resource production, so it really just needs to be a flagpole whose banner corresponds to the team that possesses it. Don't worry about those textures yet, for now just make one with a gray banner that can be replaced by Combine or Resistance graphics to signify ownership. Feel free to spruce it up with details (stuff at the base of the flagpole, whatever) but try to keep it relatively low poly.

I made those models just for fun and I didn't intend to make them low poly, but if I had a limit I would plan the model beforehand with primitives/place holders, then work up from there and trying to keep within a reasonable poly count.

I've got a little practice and a good idea of the process, but with more practice I will get better :)

No, but I will of course learn how to soon.

I'll see what I can do over this weekend/next week :D

Thanks!

Are you still around?

We're going to need some 3d work for our next major release (1.1) for Combine and Resistance buildings. This is strictly non-organic work but we will need you to unwrap and texture (or at least unwrap).

If you are still interested I can give you a test/demo assignment to see how your skills suit our needs. Let me know.

Sorry for not posting for a long time but I have been rather busy with coursework and that has taken up a lot of my time.

But I've talked to Bio and I will be happy to help out.

If you guys think I should help out completely, then I would like to bring forward some ideas and find out what direction you guys wanted the buildings to go in (Ie, Rebels may inhabit abandoned underground bases or mine shafts while the Combine might teleport their own buildings in or convert abandoned buildings above ground) and stuff like that.
