Defector Unit

Postby MCJJ » Mon Mar 28, 2025 9:48 pm

Pretty much self-explanatory for either faction in HL2 Wars.

Combine Defectors (Combine guys that joined the Resistance) can mostly be Civil Protection Units lacking masks and their unit radios, or rarely, strong human willed Combine Soldiers with the Lambda Symbol (The Resistance Insignia) sprayed on their chest armors. They will aid the Rebels in anyway they can, and they try to redeem themselves in the Rebels' eyes by killing their former comrades in action, or by wiping out any immediate threat to the Rebels for them.

Rebel Defectors (Rebel guys that joined the Combine) are pretty much the opposite. Either they can be different clothed Rebel Soldiers with the Combine Symbol replacing the Lambda Symbol on their arm guards, or different clothed Rebel Medics with black and yellow medic bands instead of the usual red and white. They function normally like other Rebels save for the fact that they're allied with the Combine instead of the Resistance.

On a side note, Vortigaunts can't betray the Resistance since the Combine are the reason why the Vorts are allied with the Resistance. Combine Elites can't betray the Combine too, because they're far too gone mechanized and brainwashed to remain human.

So, how about this Defector Unit idea? Is it okay to be implemented in HL2 Wars?

Rebels who defect simply become Civil Protection.

And Civil Protection can't defect because they end up brainwashed.

Barney is an exception, because he is disguised.

Well, take a look at this... oh wait, this is from the Combine OverWiki:

Combine OverWiki wrote:Part of the Combine Overwatch, CPs are ordinary human volunteers who have willingly joined the Combine, either for more privileges, such as additional food, better living conditions, an increase in authority and status over others, or out of genuine sympathy and identification with the Combine's aims. As such, they are not bio-mechanically modified in any way, unlike the two other Overwatch units. Barney Calhoun is notable for having infiltrated the Combine by joining the Civil Protection ranks as an undercover Resistance member.

The only time the ordinary Civil Protection Unit will get brainwashed is the time when he gets the dubious honor of turning into a Combine Soldier, or getting a promotion. Infiltrators such as Barney do not try to rise up the ranks, and any other CPs who wants to remain human have the same mutual feelings about the Civil Protection Promotion Process, which is the transformation into a mindless and almost will-less Combine Soldier, or even a humanity-stripped Civil Protection Officer.

We don't really know if Rebels who defect turn into Civil Protection Units, as there is no possible cannonical evidence of this. What we do know, however, they join the Combine willingly without second thoughts, for a better life on the Combine occupied Earth.

I mean they get brain-washed when they enter.

It's to keep people from defecting.

And brain-washing isn't considered bio-mechanical changes.

We don't actually know whether soon-to-be CPs will get brainwashed the moment they join Civil Protection, but we can leave that a possibility though. And about the brain-washing thingie? I really thought that fell into the category of bio-mechanical changes.

I was kinda influenced by the Resistance graffiti all over HL2, especially the one graffiti showing the stages of human evolution under the Combine (the one that showed the stages from left to right: Civil Protection Unit/Combine Soldier <- Human <- Prime Ape), so that graffiti left a mark in my thinking. Probably, the graffiti itself might have been inaccurate, so I might be wrong about the brain-washing stuff, and the bio-mechanical stuff as well.

Here a conundrum for you if CP's are brain washed when they join how is barney there as he had to join civil protection, for the people saying he has only infiltrated here this he has access to most combine data bases do to his CP rank which an infiltrator might not have.
rts+hl2=cool limited vocab
i have over 100 ideas and only 1 in 10 are probably good.

The word 'Infiltrator' mean different things to people. They can be seen and understood as Spies, Double Agents, Secret Agents, Special Operators, and the like. But you do have a very good point, warbrand2.

How the heck did Barney get in Civil Protection? If he had been brainwashed by the other Civil Protection guys he wouldn't be helping the Resistance now would he? He would be working against the Resistance and doing the things the average CP Unit would do everyday, i.e beating up Citizens, shooting Citizens, being sadistic to Citizens, etc.

Unless there was some sort of electrical black out happened during Barney's brainwashing process, he would be doing all of those things listed above and unknowingly Gordon or maybe other Rebels might have killed him before, during, or after the Resistance Uprising in HL2, eliminating him from the HL2 Universe and unintentionally re-writing the events of HL2, HL2:EP1, and HL2:EP2.

the way barney ended up having that suit is because he killed a CP and took his suit and then took over the cps place in the c17 trainstation

But, everytime a Civil Protection Unit dies, won't that Female Voice alert other CPs about the death of another CP on their radios? Imagine what would happen next after: Barney kills a CP, then Female Voice alerts the others, Barney changes into CP clothes and hides the corpse, and when the other CPs go to him and ask him what's going on... then what?

Won't the other CPs be suspicious of the guy that was supposed to be dead?

I mean, seriously, they could always ask Barney to take his mask off, and then he'd be asked difficult questions such as "What is your Unit Number?" then be ordered for facial identification, and then be discovered as a spy and promptly killed by a Civil Protection execution squad.

But then again, Barney can steal the uniform of a low-ranking CP but he won't have any access to the Computer Terminals and Databases all around Civil Protection headquarters, checkpoints, outposts and roadblocks. Unless CPs carry around Identification Cards and stuff, Barney stealing and lying his way into the core of the CP branches and intelligence can prove a very interesting theory about him being able to infiltrate Civil Protection's ranks.

And oh, before I forget? I think we're going off topic.

He could've knocked a CP out then stripped the poor guy out of his clothes then killed him, swapping his clothes with his current clothing and infiltrating Civil Protection in the process. That makes a lot of good sense.

Anyways, back on topic...

CPs or even Combine Soldiers can desert or defect from the Combine if the chance arises. Rebels can decide to quit the Resistance and join the Combine if they really needed or wanted to. We had a debate about whether CPs can defect or not but the possibility of the CPs defecting are high.

I'm now having doubts about Combine Soldiers being able to defect from the Combine. After all, they are more mechanized and brainwashed than the CPs. There might be a one-in-a-million chance that there are Combine Soldier defectors running around helping the Rebels instead of slaughtering them in the cities and other areas. To show their new alligeance to their former enemies, they'd spray the Lambda Symbol on their armor and replace the Combine Symbol with the Resistance Symbol. But the chances of those happening are almost down to zero.

And as for the Rebels, there's always a good chance that one of the Rebels had enough of the Resistance's cowardice (in the soon-to-be-traitor's opinion) and decided to join the 'winning side' of the war, which is the Combine (what the traitor also thinks) and betrays his/her comrades if the oppurtunity arose. To show their new alligeance to his/her previous 'enemy', he/she does a lot of stuff like sabotage and espionage for the Combine, does important missions for them, and changes his/her equipment to match either a Combine Soldier's or a Combine Elite's uniform as well. The chances of those happening are high.

So, should we add the Defector Unit?

More comments, debates, suggestions, and ideas about Defectors are appreciated.

I'm not really sure if such an unit should be available in the core gamemodes. If anything, I would rather make a gamemode around it or make it map depended.

I actually had someone or IRC would purposed something similar a while ago, where the players would need to spread propaganda through the city to recruit soldiers.

Gamemode is better than map depended. It's going to be interesting.

That must have happened years ago. I've been surfing the forums and I didn't find the topic where you said somebody suggested the players would have to spread propaganda to get some units.
