They have just announced the release of a complete collection of publisher tools, called Steamworks. They're making it available to developers and publishers completely free. Valve notes that beyond simply making the product available to consumers some of the tools can integrate copy protection, social networking services, or even server browsing features into a developing game."

valve are stupid. They are giving away there techonology. Game publishers pay valve to sell there games through steam. If valve gives out a copy of the steam system to everyone no one will pay valve to sell there games in stead use it to sell there own.

No they won't. As long as Steam is the biggest direct-download game vendor, developers will continue to sell their games through Steam, and as long as games are being sold through Steam, people will continue to buy games through Steam. I can see game publishers making their own Steam-like systems, but they won't use each other's systems, because then they'd be paying the other to sell their game, while Valve laughs maniacally in the background, still selling the games of both companies.Discrate wrote:valve are stupid. Yep, like Greenhouse is comming out soon, a totall ripoff of steam... and stuff like that. Like who would like to have all of those platforms pushed into their computers because of one game? thats completely dumb, why cant everyone just use steam like everyone else does.... i heard valve is letting other games that will be selling on steam have achievments. Its the first time when some games on the PC will have achievments, just like on the Xbox360Swede wrote:No they won't. exactly, i mean if there was 100 different steam programs everyone would be like "omg which content provider do we use", and decide not to buy games becuase there would too many content downloading programs. Steam is the best, tho it has its faults but economically one content provider is good enough cause everyone can use steams resources and not have to pay to host big data servers to deliver the content. Steam is releasing these tools so they dont have to make the games compatible with steam but instead the game devs themselves have to do the work cause valve is lazy (lol) .world_of_halflife wrote:Yep, like Greenhouse is comming out soon, a totall ripoff of steam... and stuff like that. Its simple economics, Valve saves man power and money by making game devs make it compatible with Steam, they still collect money for hosting it, and game devs sell their games on the most popular game delivery system, so everyone wins.
